Art Basel Pt. 4
The last day.
After a weekend of paranormal activity (details to follow) and dirt track racing in Central Florida, I woke up early on the last day of the Art Basel fairs. I visited Aqua Wynwood and NADA. Both have consistently been a couple of my favorite fairs in the last couple of years. It’s nice to see Aqua branch out from it’s Miami Beach location and grow to two fairs. Congrats.
Aqua Wynwood:
I’ve been a fan of Amy Elkins’ work for a while now. We’ve included her in various Humble projects, including A Field Guide to the North American Family show currently on display. It was cool to see some of her new work at the SVA Gallery:

Charles Labelle’s piece at Lawrimore Project. Equal parts performance piece, photograghy, personal ad, and urban exploration. And to top it off, the final piece is displayed on a slide projector. I need to buy one of these!

Piot Brehmer at Patricia Faure Gallery:

Sean Cheatam at Linc Art:

Bayete Ross Smith at Patricia Sweetow Gallery:

James Franklin’s delicioius, almost edible pieces and Mark Stockton’s obsession with Tom Cruise at Acuna-Hansen. YES! That drawing of Tom Cruise really is about 10 feet tall! I really loved both of their work!

Joe Wardwell at Allston Skirt Gallery. Just like Thomas Kinkade. If Thom listened to Slayer!

Shen Wei at Randall Scott Gallery:

Russell Nachman at Sixspace Gallery:

Candice Lin at Lisa Dent Gallery:

David Choong Lee at Bucheon Gallery:

NADA Art Fair:
Andre Ethier’s luscious paintings and Ivan Witenstein’s pop culture watercolors at Derek Keller Gallery:

One of the standouts from the entire weekend, Atsushi Kaga at Mother’s Tankstation:

more Kaga here.
Ben Peterson at Ratio 3 Gallery:

An-My Le at Murray Guy Gallery:

Another standout from the entire weekend was Laura Lancaster at Workplace Gallery. I love the how she evokes fading memories using found family portraits, found Super 8 film, and I especially love the scale of her pieces. If I was rich, I would have bought the entire thing. Below is one image, but here is the rest of the work that was on display:

Amazingly intricate design of Lane Twitchell at Roebling Hall:

Juan Zamora’s drawings at Vacio 9:

I then briefly jumped over to Fountain Art Fair. I didn’t have too much time left, but a couple things jumped out at me. Elbow Toe at Ad Hoc Art:

And Nick Kuszyk’s huge mural outside:

And finally, I should announce that I broke the bank and will put off the purchase of my much needed Macbook for several more months. I got caught up in the excitement of the fairs and bought a Chris Scarborough drawing from Foley Gallery. Abigail and Michael were amazing. Their enthusiasm for the work was contagious, and I couldn’t resist. And they were both just incredibly nice. It feels good to support people like that. I’m getting the drawing next week. So. Excited. Chris is having a show at Foley Gallery in the spring. I’ll definitely attend and report back. Here is the drawing I purchased:

And now off to pack my bags for a quick job in the Florida Keys.
